Established in 1976, Ala Archa National Park was created to protect the unique ecosystem of the Ala Archa River gorge. The name translates to “Bright” or “Many-colored Juniper.” In Kyrgyz culture, the Archa (juniper) is considered a sacred tree. Locals have used its smoke for centuries to purify homes and ward off ill fortune—a scent you will notice immediately upon entering the park.
